The Islamic calendar, often called the Hijri or Lunar calendar, is revered in the Muslim community because it tracks the passage of time in accordance with the moon’s phases. It consists of 12 months, each of which has either 29 or 30 days, for a total of either 354 or 355 days. The lunar calendar is an important cultural and religious resource for Muslims all around the world. The first month, Muharram, is a period of introspection and fasting that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar year, while the ninth month, Ramadan, is a time of profound spiritual devotion during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. The dates of major Islamic celebrations like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are also calculated using the Islamic calendar. Due to the influence of the moon, the length of an Islamic month varies, and the precise beginning of each month is typically determined by observing the moon. This practice adds a sense of anticipation and solidarity to the worldwide Muslim community.
